Reading in a second language often mirrors reading in L1.  Check out the following article on the background of this skill.

The summer

There will be a lot for you to do this summer.  I have divided the weeks up into two sections.  The first two weeks will be focused on reading in a second language.  The second two weeks will be writing.  The course will be divided into the following assignments:

  1. Readings, Questions and Responses- You must read the article sent to you and write two questions on the reading.  These will be about issues you want to further engage on or issues that you want to understand more.  Posing comprehension questions does little to take advantage of this oppurtunity, thus they are discouraged.  So, these are not basic recall questions.  I will respond to these questions and you will follow up with a response as well.  Your responses or reflections on the writings must be indepth and be well supported.
  2. Demonstration of Application- At the end of every two weeks, you must demonstrate your ability to apply some of the principles that you have learned during the given section by composing an argumentative paper responding to a theoretical or practical issue, a pedagogical tool (lesson plan) and methodological plan. Research will be required. In other words, you will write a 5-7 page paper and a lesson plan.  The first paper and lesson plan will be on reading and the second on writing.
  3. Final: Take home exam.  This will be handed out during the third week of June.  It will encompass the semesters work in its entirety.  It will be due the last day of class (June 29th).

Welcome

This will be where you will see you assingments and some readings.  You will also be making comments on a daily basis about your readings.
